 Sunday, October 19

We left the wonderful town of Tirano this morning and headed into the mountains, where, on the other side, we stopped for a break in the town of Edolo that included a quick walk through town, and an Espresso bar break, I had a Marocchino, and we got our very first hazy view of the Adamello Dolomites. (See above photo.)

hoping to visit Monte Isolo, the island in the middle of the lake, by ferry in the morning,
and ride bicycles around it.

Monday, October 20

Well, if we were gonna have a day with marginal weather, today was the day for that to happen. It started out gloomy, but it wasn’t raining, so six of us rented Ebikes and went to the ferry office, got tickets, and rode with our bikes across to the island of Monte Isola. There is a 5 mile road that runs around the exterior of the island, passing through several small villages, so we started off, going counterclockwise around the island.

When we got back to Miraglio, where the ferry landing was located, we stopped for an espresso and a potty break, and then decided to ride back around the island clockwise just to see if the sights were any different going in that direction. 

We finished right about noon. My friends were going to have lunch on the island, but I have been eating too much food, so I decided to just head back to the mainland, have a protein bar and relax. Which is what I did. Sure enough, the rain started about 1 o’clock and it’s been raining off and on most of the afternoon. 

We’re having dinner in the hotel dining room again tonight, where we had dinner last night which was fantastic. So I’m looking forward to tonight‘s dinner. Meanwhile, here are some photos from today:

I came back to the hotel with the idea of reading a few chapters of my book but soon dozed off. Nothing like a 90 minute nap on a rainy afternoon.

Oct. 23-25, Into the Dolomites: Bressanone, Balzano, Val Gardena

  Beautiful, right? But where those clouds are should be Dolomites ! Thursday, October 23 Starting out from Trento in a light rain, as we climbed, the clouds lifted some. Exiting the highway, we ascended a very narrow winding road to Santa Magdalena in the Val de Funes , a beautiful valley at the gateway to the Dolomites. Our local guide, Alex, provided some light snacks at the top of our hike.  Lunch at Hotel Fines in Santa Magdalena, South Tyrol , Italy. Only mere miles from the Austrian border at Brenner Pass . Oct. 10-12, Cinque Terre, The Italian Riviera

  Friday, October 10 Monterosso Al Mare  ***** Vernazzo ***** Corniglia ***** Manarola ***** Riomaggiore  I had thought that our drive from Genova down to Cinque Terre , the five villages of the Italian Riviera , would be along the ocean with beautiful views of the sea, and all that sort of thing. In reality, there were more tunnels than there were views, and even when there were views, there was a high wall along the side of the highway that kept you from appreciating how close you really were to the ocean.  The highway runs probably half a mile to a mile inland from the coast and is elevated several hundred feet, so it’s a little hard to appreciate the beauty of the sea from the road . Once you get off the highway, the road in to Monterosso is windy and steep, up and down, with all kinds of views, but is really a little on the scary side, especially with a fast driver like ours.
